Originally, the residents of Kg Sungai Liang lived by the shore. But in the early 1950s, the Public Works Department built a major road connecting the Belait and Tutong districts.
While doing so, the department built barracks to house its employees which mainly consisted of Muslims, thus contributing to the Muslim population in Kg Sungai Liang. At the time, residents performed their Friday prayers in Seria Town Mosque or Tutong's Kg Danau Mosque.
This difficulty saw residents wanting their own mosque for convenience and in 1957, a mosque named the Kg Sungai Liang Mosque was completed, made out of wood with zinc roofing. Its area measured 1,600 square feet.
It was equipped with a beduk (a drum to mark prayer times), a well for ablution and speakers presented by the British Malayan Petroleum (BMP).
By the early 1960s, many of the village residents moved inland, closer to the main road so efforts were made to build a second mosque. With the help of the villagers and funding from public donations and the government, the mosque was completed on December 3, 1965, located not far from its predecessor. This mosque covered an area of 2,500 square feet. By 1978, the mosque had deteriorated significantly and the government of Brunei Darussalam saw a need for it to be replaced. The third mosque was completed in 1980 and now comes fully equipped with parking spaces, a kitchen and air conditioning.
