MORE than 500 students from 17 schools stormed the Jerudong International School field yesterday morning, taking part in a day-long netball competition organised by the school.
A total of 47 teams took part in the annual JIS Netball Funday played over seven courts and organised for the fourth time this year.
According to the teacher in charge of the competition, Clayton Walker, there were 18 teams competing in the Under-18 age group category, 13 in the Under-15 category, nine in the Under-13 as well as five in the Under-11.
"The event simply keeps growing each year and today's (Sunday's) response is a stark contrast to the handful of primary schools that participated in the inaugural competition," said Walker.
With the aim of promoting netball in the country, especially at school level, Walker said that the tournament organisers also hoped the competition would help foster better relationships between JIS and other schools in Brunei.
In addition, the 34-year-old Walker hopes that the competition will also help build a strong relationship with the Co-curricula Department and wishes that the department will invite them for local school sports tournaments.
International School Brunei emerged champions in the Under-18 category when they beat JIS 8-7, but the Under-15 age group saw JIS clinch the title over ISB with a 5-2 victory.
Sayyidina Husain Secondary School won the Under-13 trophy with a 4-1 win over ISB, while JIS B and JIS A were crowned winners and runners-up respectively in the Under-11 category.
