NEW improved menu with a wider selection of dishes. Check it out!
If you are in Kuala Belait and thinking of breaking fast without over-indulging on a huge spread, then RMS Diner is for you.
Featuring juicy steaks and wholesome burgers, RMS Diner has won over many loyal fans since opening its doors in July this year.
Previously, the café was located in Gadong. However, perhaps due to lack of parking, it has strategically relocated itself to our famed oil town in Kuala Belait to the delight of the local folks, but to the dismay of food lovers in Bandar Seri Begawan.
The moment you step into the premises, you'd feel as if you are in a cozy café with lots of memorabilia and collectibles nestled on wall pedestals.
The decoration is in rich hues of brown while the staff are bedecked in cool country-style checked red and white shirts plus wide smiles to boot.
This is indeed the perfect place to dine in or to hang out with friends and loved ones.
The place is spacious and comfortable and one wouldn't feel out of place here.
Western food fans would be thrilled to see the selection of burgers, steaks and snacks but since there were only four of us, we decided not to over order. Hence, after much flipping of the menu, we decided to try the Chili Cheese Fries, Onion Rings, Buffalo Chicken Wings, Classic Fried Calamari, Seafood Chowder, Caesar Salad.
While for mains, the Mushroom Swiss Burger, Domenico's Lamb Burger and the Lamb Shank.
Apparently RMS Diner's Soft Shell Crab Burger and Beef Meatball Sandwich are also yummy, but we had already ordered so much!
Perhaps another day, then.
Service was swift and friendly.
One by one, our orders started arriving at the table.
Of the snacks that we ordered, I liked the Buffalo Chicken Wings which was coated with delectable seasoning and grilled to just the right taste, with a little bit of brown on the sides, like what we do at home grills.
Nibble into it and feel the flavour and aroma of the still-tender chicken tantalising your taste buds.
Second tops was of course the Onion Rings which was coated in a light yet crispy batter.
The combination of large onions and batter was good. Bite into it and feel the puffy, crispy batter with its rich taste. A simple snack that you can't stop laying your hands on!
The Classic Fried Calamari had a different batter and you can taste the freshness of the squids which went well with the batter.
For soup, all of us ordered the Seafood Chowder soup and it proved to be a great choice. Delivered steaming hot, the taste was distinctively delicious and creamy.
After what seemed like a great entrée into the meal, we were quite satiated.
With the good company and cheerful banter amidst this delightful environment, the meal just got better and better.
The Lamb Shank soon came, and since we were "sharing" and trying a bit of every dish, we were amazed to see the generous serving that came. The lamb was well marinated and cooked to just the right tender texture.
The homemade gravy had a subtle smoky flavour and combined with mashed potatoes, it was a hearty dish indeed.
Domenico's Lamb Burger soon arrived.
It did look a little plain at first, but then this was home-made style and everyone agreed that the taste was better than it looked.
The lamb patty is made from a blend of lamb and herbs, then layered within a burger bun embellished with sautéed onions and tomatoes to zest up the flavour.
The sautéed onions created a lingering taste that went well with everyone's taste buds.
After a great meal that is not too heavy on the stomach or wallet, end it well with the tempting waffles with ice cream, plus a drizzle of chocolate sauce.
The waffles are prepared just nice with a nice brown tan and slighty crispy edge.
It went well with vanilla ice cream and the chocolate sauce enhanced the sweet finish to this warm and cool indulgence.
And what's next? Lavazza coffee, of course!
Sip your favourite Italian coffee and relax after a great meal.
If you prefer something refreshing, try out the Margherita mocktail, laced with salt on the sides of the glass.
All in all, we all enjoyed ourselves at RMS Diner and would come back again whenever I am in Kuala Belait.
I like the place and the way the food is prepared and served that seemed to remind me of a home-style café without all the frills but rich in all the right tastes and textures.
So if you are ever in Kuala Belait, do give RMS Diner a try!
