Let us work hard and smart

HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam again shows his far-sightedness and concern for the welfare of the people of the country. Delivering his titah on the New Year's Eve, the monarch untiringly cautioned against overspending and incurring huge debts at all levels, and highlighted the importance of strengthening economic diversification efforts to further boost the economy and create more job opportunities.

As the nation is preparing for the implementation of the 10th National Development Plan next April, His Majesty reminded that peace is priceless and crucial for the development. "Development means nothing without peace," he said, stressing that it is the duty of every person to ensure that peace is maintained.

Highlighting the uncertain economic and financial situation being faced by the global community due to huge debts incurred by developed countries, the monarch said that he will never be tired of reminding everyone that "we must multiply our efforts in diversifying the economy".

It is a true fact that His Majesty has always reminded us about economic diversification, which is so important and decisive for a better future of the nation, because we should not rely merely on gas and oil. As we begin the New Year, which is, for sure, full of challenges, let's take a sincere and serious pledge to leave behind our egoism and put aside our personal interests. As citizens of this country, we have a duty and a responsibility towards the nation and its leader.

In the face of the heavy challenges and daunting tasks ahead, let us all work hard with commitment and dedication to generate a tougher generation which is ready to work and think hard and smart, in the truest sense, to take our Abode of Peace to new heights of economic development, excellence, peace and stability. If we really want to enjoy peace and tranquility and better standard of living, we must strive to make the Sultanate economically self-reliant and self-sufficient.
