S Korea President to meet Lee next week over probe

Sunday, December 23, 2007

PRESIDENT Roh Moo-hyun will likely meet with President-elect Lee Myung-bak next week to discuss a smooth transfer of power and a possible veto of a bill on an independent probe of Lee's alleged financial fraud, South Korean Yonhap news agency quoted officials as saying yesterday.

Roh's intention to meet one-on-one next week with Lee was delivered to the president-elect through the presidential chief of staff, Moon Jae-in, on Friday morning.

Moon paid a visit to Lee at his private office in downtown Seoul, and delivered Roh's words of congratulations on his landslide victory in Wednesday's presidential election, along with an orchid as a gift.

Lee of the conservative main opposition Grand National Party garnered 48.7 percent of the vote, about 23 points ahead of his closest contender, Chung Dong-young of the pro-government United New Democratic Party (UNDP), who received 26.1 percent.

The gap of 5.3 million votes between Lee and Chung is the largest in the history of South Korean presidential polls.

According to Roh's spokesperson, Cheong Ho-seon, Moon delivered Roh's intentions to faithfully cooperate in the power transfer, but didn't make any remarks related to the independent counsel bill.

Lee's spokesperson Park Hyung-joon said after Moon's visit that Lee agreed to meet with Roh at the earliest possible date, with next Wednesday being discussed as the most plausible meeting date.

"Lee stressed the importance of respecting Roh as his predecessor and promised to selectively inherit the Roh administration's policies and practices," Park told reporters, adding that Lee also praised Roh's Participatory Government for having engaged in a campaign against authoritarianism.
