ARF to review disaster response

Thursday, July 24, 2008

STRENGTHENING disaster response is a key priority for ministers meeting at Asia's top security forum today after May's devastating cyclone in Myanmar and earthquake in China.

The recent calamities pushed emergency planning to the top of the agenda at the annual 27-nation Asean Regional Forum (ARF), spokesman Andrew Tan said on the eve of the event.

The group includes the 10 members of the Association of South-East Asian Nations plus Australia, Canada, the European Union, New Zealand, the United States, Russia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste, Pakistan, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Bangladesh, Japan, China and India.

A joint civilian-military disaster relief exercise is expected to be considered, among other measures.

ARF foreign ministers adopted a statement on disaster management in 2006 but officials say actions are required.DPA
