THAILAND'S Supreme Court yesterday issued a fourth arrest warrant for ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is living in self-imposed exile in Britain.

The court issued the arrest warrant and suspended its latest corruption case against Thaksin when he failed to appear in court yesterday morning, a court official said.

Thaksin is currently living with his family in Britain following the conviction of his wife, Pojaman, on tax evasion charges.

Thaksin was to be the first defendant to stand trial on allegations of improperly legalising a lottery scheme.

Among the 46 other accused, who all deny the charges, are three serving ministers: the newly-appointed deputy prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, Industry Minister Pracha Promnog and Labour Minister Uraiwan Thienthong.

The court announced that all defendants would have to notify the court if they wish to travel abroad while the case continues.

Thaksin broke his bail conditions in another corruption case when he fled to London in early August.

He is now seeking political asylum.
