Sarawak keen to explore golf tourism sector, says CM

Thursday, October 9, 2008

SARAWAK is keen to explore its potential as a golf tourism destination, Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said today.

He said the interest in the sport was growing and there was also an increase in the number of golf courses in the state.

"Golf clubs in the state could form a joint venture in promoting golf tourism. I do believe it will be successful," he said when opening the Sarawak Club Golf Resort (SCGR) near here today.

Beside SCGR, Sarawak has several other golf courses such as the Sarawak Golf Club and Prison Golf Club in Kuching; Miri Golf Club and Eastwood Valley Golf camp in Miri, Sibu Golf Club in Sibu as well as Bintulu Golf Club and Taman Kidurong Golf Club in Bintulu.

To promote Sarawak as a golf tourism destination, Taib suggested the SCGR, located along the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway, to look into the possibility of promoting the sport along with medical tourism here.

He said the new Sarawak International Medical Centre, located near SCGR, with modern facilities and healthcare, was expected to boost the state's medical tourism.

"The medical tourism is picking up. I would like to advise the golf clubs here to form a strategic partnership to attract foreign tourists to explore the golf and medical tourism sector," he said.

The RM24 million ($10 million) SCGR is a 18-hole golf course complete with a 25-bay driving range and supporting facilities.

The course was designed by Ted Paslow, a veteran golf course designer who has built courses in Australia, China, Vietnam, Pakistan and other parts of Southeast Asia.

The resort also provides a 35,000 square feet of club house which houses a banquet hall, cafeteria and bar, library, changing rooms, gymnasium, sport shop, play-grounds for children, outdoor spa and a full sized swimming pool.
