Brunei Grand Sale kicks off

Saturday, September 8, 2007

DISCOUNTS and good business practices draw crowds to participate in the Brunei Grand Sale 2007, a senior government official said yesterday.

The Brunei Grand Sale kicked off to a good start yesterday, much to the delight of locals, who are priming for the coming festive season.

Faridah, a mother of two, told The Brunei Times that she usually buys materials to prepare for the upcoming Raya festivities. "They give good discounts, especially before the festive season, so I stock up for Hari Raya. I buy things like shoes and clothes, especially the ready-made ones, as tailors won't be taking orders for Baju Raya anymore," she said.

Browsing through the stalls showcasing goods, shopper, Kartini, found Brunei's sale season the "best time to stock up on food" in preparation for Hari Raya.

She said the Brunei Grand Sale presents an excellent opportunity for Bruneian enterprises to market their unique goods. "One of these stalls actually produce gluten-free biscuits. It's really good because there's a market for these gluten-free foods in places like Europe."

The shoppers were part of the busy mob that were present at the official launch of the Brunei Grand Sale 2007 at The Mall in Gadong yesterday. Hj Awang Hj Mat Daud, Acting Chief Director at the Department of Economic Planning and Development, said the sale hopes to encourage more Bruneians to spend in order to improve the local economy.

On hand to officiate the ceremony was Dato Paduka Haji Kamis Haji Tamin, Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office.

Haji Awang said trust is vital to consumers' support for the annual event. "If all the ... rules are complied with, in addition to avoiding duping consumers, the BGS (Brunei Grand Sale) will definitely achieve its objectives and will continue to be relevant in the coming years."

This year's Brunei Grand Sale is the 13th such event held by the Department of Economic Planning and Development in collaboration with retailers. The Brunei Times
