Raya sale season shifts to high gear

Friday, September 28, 2007

VENDORS seeking to cash in on Raya preparations are paying at least $1,050 per booth at the Hari Raya bazaar at The Mall in Gadong.

The rate, which can reach $1,800 for some bigger-sized booths, is high compared to what they pay on other times of the year, but entrepreneurs are optimistic their sales in the next two weeks will be enough to cover for the rental fee.

Event management firm Prime Media launched the bazaar yesterday, the same day as the government pay day and two weeks before the Muslim majority in Brunei observe the celebration of Aidil Fitri.

Out of the many booths on the ground, first and second storeys of the mall, a standout is one that sells a device called the DragonFly. The contraption makes water from thin air.

Manufactured in Singapore, the DragonFly was brought in by Perusahaan Nur Baqiah.

"This is the first day we're introducing the machine, and it's the first in Brunei to actually make water by sucking in surrounding air and going through a condensation process," general manager Hj Baharuddin Dato Paduka Hj Noordin said.

The recommended retail price of the DragonFly is $1,800, but for the duration of the bazaar, it sells for $1,600.

"Unlike other water dispensers in the market, you don't have to spend more for its water supply. You're also saving on water bills and even when the water supply in your area is disrupted, you still have a source of water," Hj Baharuddin said.
