Cable thefts cause M'sia power supplier losses of US$13m

TENAGA NASIONAL BERHAD (TNB) incurred a loss of almost RM46 million (US$13 million) since 2004 due to theft of cables and copper plate fuses from its sub-stations.

TNB Senior General Manager of Region II Azman Nor said yesterday that some 2,800 cases of trespassing at its sub-stations was recorded since 2004.

"The most number of theft of cables and copper plates occurred in Selangor, the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Johor and Perak," he told reporters.

Azman said TNB cooperated closely with the police and the local community and conducted patrols in areas often targeted by the thieves in an attempt to check the crime. Meanwhile, Azim said TNB in Terengganu incurred a loss of RM80,000 last year due to such crime, up from RM50,000 lost in 2005.

Cable theft is also rampant in Brunei Darussalam, the most recent incident was on April 26.

The theft caused massive power outage for more than an hour in Muara, 18th mile of Jalan Tutong, Kampung Manggis, Sungai Akar and some parts of Tutong district.

The Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister's Office, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Yahya Hj Bakar had told reporters that cable theft will continue as long as the market for the stolen goods exist.Bernama
