China-made Geely CK sedan makes its debut in Brunei

Saturday, June 2, 2007

CHINA-made automobiles are fast making their presence felt in Brunei as local distributor GHK Motors yesterday launched the Geely CK, a sedan made by China's Geely International.

Consumer demand for affordable and value-for-money cars is increasing. This prompted GHK Motors to partner with Geely International to bring China-made cars to the sultanate, said Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Goh King Chin, Managing Director of GHK Motors.

China-made cars have a lot of potential in the Brunei market, said John Too, Marketing Manager of GHK Motors, citing the encouraging response to the introduction of another China-made car, ZXAuto Landmark, by Zhong Xing Auto in December last year.

He said the price of the cars has attracted prospective buyers.

The cars are also proven to have established engines such as the Mitsubishi engine for the Landmark and the Toyota Soluna engine for the new Geely CK car, he added.

More than 40 seven-seater Landmark cars will be shipped in soon after orders were placed, he told The Brunei Times.

The five-seater Geely CK car valued at $18,000 is powered by a 1.5 litre engine, and has a fuel efficiency of 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres. It has a fuel tank capacity of 45 litres. It has an engine displacement of 1,498 cubic centimetres and has maximum speed of 160km per hour.

China's Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Tong Xiaoling was also present to unveil, together with Pehin Dato Goh, the Geely CK car at the GHK Showroom.

Geely was founded in 1986 by entrepreneur Li Shufu, with a base in Huangyan, Luqiao , Taizhou city, Zhejiang Province. It was set initially set up as a maker of refrigerator parts. The firm went into car manufacturing in 1997.

The firm is now in the midst of a global expansion, with plans to set up an assembly plant in the United States.

Other Chinese car firms with global presence are Brilliance China, Chery Automobile and Great Wall Motors. The Brunei Times
