Malaysia Airlines cuts fares from Asean countries

Saturday, June 9, 2007

MALAYSIA Airlines (MAS) is slashing between 10 and 15 per cent from its usual package fares marketed in Asean countries until year-end to lure more tourists into the country.

MAS commercial director Datuk Rashid Khan told a media briefing here yesterday the promotion is part of MAS' joint programme with Tourism Malaysia in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2007.

He said MAS has introduced 250 packages for the promotion, and the discounts are from June 1 to December 31.

The MAS-Tourism Malaysia collaboration is to promote attractive and affordable packages in Asean countries for increased tourist arrivals into the country.

This initiative rewards tourists to Malaysia from the Asean countries with best prices and value deals for their air travel and vacations offered on MAS' available seat capacity throughout various periods of this year.

Rashid said MAS has allocated 2.5 million seats under the programme and "expects about 1.7 million seats to be taken up and is confident to chalk up RM20 million ($8.9 million) revenue through the offers".

The customised packages from as low as US$108 for twin-share to a maximum of US$1,129 single supplement, start from a three-day-two-night Malaysian experience with superior hotel accommodation, tours and meals.

Rashid said most of these "value for money" packages are valid for travel till yearend with minimal surcharges payable for travel during peak periods.

Such offers can be grabbed through a wide range of MAS' distribution channels in the Asean countries' ticketing offices, website (www.malaysiaairlines.com), 24-hour toll free call centre 1-300-883000 in Malaysia and some 100 participating travel agents.

Both Tourism Malaysia and MAS are jointly funding up to RM2.1 million to showcase the country's tourism programme in the Asean region through regular promotions.

In addition, the national carrier has allocated some RM50 million to boost promotions for the programme and "so far has invested over RM6 million", said Rashid. Bernama
