THAILAND showed no mercy against Cambodia in the semi-finals of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy for Association of Southeast Asian Youth Championship yesterday, demolishing the Cambodians 10-1 to book their place in the final against Myanmar, who beat Malaysia 2-0 in the other semi-final late yesterday, tomorrow.
Phonlawut Donehui gave the Cambodians a taste of things to come in the third minute scoring a headed goal off a free kick in the match played at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.
Chan Chaya equalised for the Cambodians in the 20th minute, with Kouch Sokumpheak providing the assist after stealing the ball from defender Sok Rithy.
Controlling the midfield with their assured passing, the Thais' long balls into the opponent's box have proven to be a winning tactic for head coach Kawin Kachendecha and last night was no different.
A through ball in the 38th minute sliced the Cambodians' defence apart and Anawin Jujeen scored in a one-on-one situation with Semreth Seiha in the Cambodian goal.
Three minutes before the break, Wisoot Bunpeng made it 3-1 after Choklap Nilsang squared the ball from the right.
Wisoot struck again in the 47th minute with a powerful shot on goal when the Cambodian defence failed to clear their line.
Taking full advantage of the half-hearted Cambodian defence, Naruphol Ar-Romsawa, who plays for the Everton FC youth team, scored in the 53rd minute after receiving a low cross from the right flank to make it 5-1.
Choklap, who was a constant menace on the right wing, put his name on the score-sheet two minutes later when he scored with a volley from outside the box and Wisoot bagged his hat-trick in the 57th minute with a simple tap-in after Anawin picked him out from outside the box on the right.
Seiha was replaced by Chea Gena right after that, but it made no difference and Anawin scored his second in the 66th minute after another one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
Substitute Sakarin Chanyotha scored the Thais' ninth goal with a powerful shot from outside the box in the 73rd minute and Chainarong Tatong made it 10-1 with a headed goal off a corner.
In the other semi-final late last night, Myanmar, the tournament's top scorers, were just too good for the inexperienced Malaysia. Aung Myo Thant and Si Thu Than scored in the 21st and 27th minutes respectively to set a final date with Thailand tomorrow. The Brunei Times
