HM visits Cambodian anti-terrorist unit

Saturday, April 7, 2007

DECKED in full military uniform, His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, yesterday visited the Special Airborne 911 in Kambol, the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) anti-terrorist unit which was established in 2002.

Upon the arrival, His Majesty was greeted by General Tea Banh, Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Minister of National Defence of Cambodia, General Neang Phat, Secretary of State at the Ministry of National Defence, and General Ke Kim Yan, Commander-in-Chief of the RCAF.

Also present were Major General Chap Pheakdey, Commander of the Special Forces Airborne 911, and other senior officials of the centre.

During the visit, His Majesty inspected a line-up of 500 commandos after which, the national anthems of Brunei and Cambodia were played. The morning continued with a briefing on the background and activities of the centre by Major General Cheap Pheakdey.

His Majesty witnessed snipers and parachutes in action followed by demonstrations on the art of self-defence and anti-terrorism mission.

After visiting the centre, His Majesty left for the Siem Reap province arriving just before noon.

At the airport, His Majesty was welcomed by Sou Phirin, Governor of Siem Reap province, and was presented with a bouquet of flowers from garland girls.

Also present to greet His Majesty were members of the cabinet of Cambodia; Pengiran Hajah Basmillah Pengiran Abbas, the Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to Cambodia, Nan Sy, the Ambassador of Cambodia to Brunei Darussalam, and Eat Seyla, the Director of Protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Cambodia.

After a private lunch, His Majesty continued the day's activities by visiting the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) late in the afternoon.

His Majesty was welcomed by Lieutenant General Khem Sophoan, Director-General of CMAC.

After the welcoming speech, His Majesty was briefed on the centre's operation by Heng Ratana, the Deputy Director-General of CMAC.

The briefing included highlights of the Royal Government's vision and strategies on reducing and ending casualties resulting from landmine accidents. Although 2006 figures have shown a significant decrease in the number of casualties at 440 from 1,164 in 1999, the rate is still considered extremely high compared to other countries with active residual war explosives.

At the same time, the Royal Government of Cambodia is working hard to achieve their vision of Zero Victim by 2012.

His Majesty was taken on a tour of the site where His Majesty witnessed a demonstration on locating landmines and the Brush Cutter, Mobile Platoon and Mine Detection Dog activities.

His Majesty was also invited to detonate two landmines anti-personnel and anti-tank — before signing the guestbook.

The CMAC was established in 1992 by the Cambodia Supreme National Council.

The centre acts as the central coordination and regulatory mechanism responsible for overseeing all landmine action activities in Cambodia which is in line with the kingdom's efforts in ensuring the development of its national capacity in sustaining all aspects of de-mining-related activities.

The second day of His Majesty's visit ended with a state banquet hosted by Sou Phirin.

Today on the last day of the four-day visit, His Majesty will be touring the famous Angkor Wat at the Angkor Archaeological Park and the Bayon Temple before leaving for Brunei Darussalam.
