Brunei aims to cut road accidents to minimum

Tuesday, April 24, 2007

THE recent statistics show that 16 people died in road accidents during the first three months of this year, a major increase from seven casualties during the same period last year.

This was the main highlight of the speech of Her Royal Highness Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna, the Ambassador-At-Large, at the launch of the First United Nations Global Safety Week held yesterday morning at the ICC in Berakas.

In her speech Her Royal Highness expressed concern about young road users who are at high risk in the cases of road accidents.

Her Royal Highness stated that the World Youth Assembly for Road Safety to be held in Geneva this week has the same theme "Road Safety is No Accident".

The message underlines the fact that accidents do not happen by chance but occur due to the negligence of the road users.

Her Royal Highness cited that more than one million are killed in road accidents all over the world, and about 50 million suffer injuries or permanent disability due to road accidents. The number of people killed worldwide in road accidents is more than the victims claimed by chronic diseases.

More than 40 per cent of victims in road accident deaths are young road users below the age of 25.

According to the Land Transport Department statistics, there are more than 170,000 vehicles active in the country and around 12,000 applications for vehicle registration are received each year.

Also, as many 6,712 people obtained their driving licences in 2006 whereas last year the number was 6,341.

This has heightened the risks of road accidents in the country and the importance of road safety awareness among the public.

With this in mind, Her Royal Highness said that the Brunei Darussalam Road Safety Council's main target for this year is to reduce country's ratio of road accident deaths to a minimum in comparison to other developed countries.

In her speech, Her Royal Highness emphasised that vehicle users should follow all road safety measures while driving.

In order to reduce road accidents, Her Royal Highness said that there are several aspects which relevant authorities must address.

These include education, sufficient infrastructure, effective enforcement of traffic laws and regulations, road safety campaigns to improve discipline on the roads such as the use of helmets and seat belts.

During the event, Dato Paduka Hj Md Yusof bin Hj Md Hassan, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communications, who is also Chairman of the Brunei Darussalam Road Safety Council, in his speech, stated that according to the Brunei Darussalam Road Safety Council's Action Plan, a number of activities and programmes have been initiated.

These include the construction of a driving test circuit complex which will be completed by mid of next year and the Brunei Shell Petroleum Road Traffic Game Park situated at the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre (OGDC).

Asean countries, including Brunei, have launched the Asean Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan to be carried on for a period of five years, from 2005 to 2010.
