Friday, June 29, 2007
THE Asean Schools Tour made its way to Bruneian shores after stopping by Phuket, Thailand and Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Designed to raise awareness of Asean amongst the youth, the educational tour was hosted by Masin Secondary School and jointly coordinated by Sayyidina Husain and Sayyidina Hassan Secondary School.
The project is part of the Asean Knowledge Caravan initiative by Asean Secretary-General Ong Keng Yong.
In his speech at the ceremony yesterday, the Asean Secretary-General highlighted the importance of unity within the Southeast Asian bloc.
"Like a mother and father in the family, Asean brings together the rest of the family members. If there is a quarrel, they will find solutions to resolve (the matter)," he said.
He spoke of the many opportunities that continued peace will bring to the future of Asean member countries.
"As a result of Asean, many of us are quite well known in the world."
He told the 300 students, VIPs, invited guests and teachers from Brunei-Muara district that Asean functions to help each of the countries to reach out and "make ourselves well known to the people around the world".
There have also been many opportunities resulting from the solid friendship in Asean, Ong said.
"All the countries are working together to build what we call a 'single market'."
Under this new development, an open employment portal will make it easier for those seeking employment within the region.
"This is the future for us," he said.
"We are very proud of the achievement we have accomplished in the last 40 years."
Hjh Aishah Hj Muhd Husain, Brunei's Acting Director of Schools, in her speech acknowledged the tremendous efforts of the present generation of leaders in their work to successfully enhance the existing goodwill and understanding among the Asean member countries.
She said that to further strengthen this bond, the younger generation must learn more about the member countries so that they become knowledgeable about the rich diversity of Asean cultures and differences in ways of life.
Fifteen students from the Masin, Sayyidina Husain, Sayyidina Hassan participated in the Asean Quiz and Digital Media Competition.
