THE star of Beverly Hills 90210, Tori Spelling, has become a mother for the first time, giving birth to a boy, People magazine reported. Liam Aaron McDermott was born on Tuesday in a Los Angeles hospital to his American mom, 33, and her actor husband, Canadian Dean McDermott, 40, the US celebrity magazine said, citing a spokeswoman for the couple, who wed in May.

She told the magazine that mother and baby were healthy and the boy's middle name was for Spelling's father, prolific television producer Aaron Spelling, who died in June.

The boy is the second child for McDermott, who has an eight-year-old son from a previous marriage.

The baby has been the catalyst for Spelling to try to reconcile with her own mother, Candy Spelling, who told People that she was at the hospital when her grandson was born.

"Words can't describe the joy and elation I feel at this truly happy event," she told the magazine. "I am looking forward to doting on my new little grandson."

The mother and daughter have long had a troubled relationship, which worsened with the negative portrayal of the mother character in Tori's VH1 TV sitcom So NoTORIous as well as the death of Aaron Spelling.

Tori and McDermott married shortly after the bride's divorce from her first husband, Charlie Shanian, and the groom's divorce from his TV chef wife, Mary Jo Eustace. Spelling and McDermott met in the summer of 2005 during filming in Canada for the TV movie Mind over Murder.

Since Beverly Hills 90210 went off the air, Spelling has appeared in Scream 2 and Scary Movie 2 as well as numerous TV shows.

McDermott has filled a long list of TV and film roles, including the hit Canadian programme Due South and the Kevin Costner western Open Range.

They are due to appear again on the screen together in their TV reality show Tori and Dean: Inn Love, which focuses on their newly opened Southern California bed and breakfast. DPA
