PROJECTING its investment environment and its image as a prime investment destination, Cambodian ambassador in Brunei Haji Nan Sy, yesterday called upon the Bruneian businessmen to invest in Cambodia where business opportunities are increasing.

Haji Nan Sy said, "Cambodia is an open country and any Bruneian is welcome to set up business there."

He said Cambodia has a lot to offer so both countries can work together and cooperate.

"Labour in Cambodia is comparatively very cheap, so Bruneians investors can advantage of that. So for the investors, it is a very good opportunity to invest there," he added.

The Cambodian ambassador said that the potential investment areas are agriculture, tourism and petrol and gas.

When asked how Brunei can start a venture in Cambodia in terms of oil and gas, he said "The market in Cambodia is big with a population of 13 to 14 million people. With this big population, market will be big".

"The price of petrol in Cambodia is currently costlier than in Brunei. If Brunei comes in, hopefully the price will be reduced," he said

In this regard, the representatives of the Brunei National Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd paid a courtesy call yesterday on Haji Nan Sy at his residence.

Mohd Ja'afar Bakar, the assistant general manager, and Iskandar Yahya, the chief executive officer, said, "We want to explore the areas. As we are an oil and gas company and we are looking at the possibilities of entering this sector.

"Cambodia is an interesting country, and we do have strong bilateral ties with them," they added.

"In terms of oil and gas, Cambodia is still relatively young, we are looking for possibilities of doing something to help," they added.

Haji Nan Sy said, "Brunei and Cambodia have not yet decided on anything but we are just identifying the possibilities."

He added that other foreign companies such as from Malaysia have invested in Cambodia in telecommunications, malls and hotels. "The booming sector now is the tourism sector where we have tourists coming in from South Korea, China, Europe, Malaysia and Singapore mainly due to the Angkor Wat temple," added the ambassador.

He added that Brunei and Cambodia ties are mainly through cooperation.

" For example, Cambodian delegates would visit Brunei to attend His Majesty's 60th birthday celebrations and hopefully cooperation will be further strengthened from in the future," he said.
