Friday, March 9, 2007
PRICES of basic goods and services fell 0.2 per cent month-on-month in January due to tamer prices of goods and services under the transport and recreation and entertainment groups.
According to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) released by the Department of Economic Planning and Development, Prime Minister's Office, on a year-on-year basis, the CPI also fell, slowing 0.9 per cent compared to the same month in 2006.
On a month-on-month basis, recreation and entertainment prices dropped 7.7 per cent due to a sharp decrease in holiday package expenses.
The cost for transport also declined by 0.2 per cent in January because of the fall in air fare prices.
On the other hand, the index for clothing and footwear rose 6.7 per cent month-on-month in January due to higher prices of ready-made clothing and accesories, materials for male and female, haberdasheries and footwear.
The clothing and footwear index showed the biggest price increase for the period.
Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages also rose, with a 0.4 per cent increase. This can be attributed to steeper prices of rice, flour, noodles, fresh and frozen buffalo meat, fresh and frozen chicken meat, fresh fish, milk, eggs, cooking oils and fresh leafy vegetables.
The cost for housing, water, electricity and maintenance as well as education and communication has remained stable, while the cost for household goods, services and operation rose 1.8 per cent.
The government report stated the prices went up because of higher prices of furniture, video equipment, musical instruments, floor covering and other household items.
As the prices for medical treatment increased, the cost of medical and health services also rose by 0.4 per cent.
