Sabah out to woo Brunei tourists

A TOTAL of 600,000 Bruneian visitor arrivals is expected to travel to the Malaysia Peninsula in 2007, said an official from the Tourism Malaysia Board.

Speaking to The Brunei Times yesterday at the Sabah Consumer Travel Fair in the Mall, assistant market communications manager of the Sabah Tourism Board, Hezrina Ibrahim, said Sabah receives a high influx of Bruneian tourists arrivals.

Hezrina said "For 2007, we are expecting a total of 80,000 tourist arrivals from Brunei Darussalam. Visitors from Brunei are the second highest numbers of tourists arrivals".

Offering a 'generalised tourism product' Sabah's tourism caters to everyone which include, family, children, students and many more, she said.

She said with a diverse range of activities and sights available from diving, shopping and to having the highest mountain in South East Asia (Kota Kinabalu), the Travel Fair established for the first time it is to further attract the already large Bruneian market that travel to Sabah.

In 2006, tourist arrivals to Sabah amounted to a total of 2,091,658 of which 67,464 arrivals from Brunei contributed to the figure. For 2005, 58,544 Bruneians entered Sabah between the month of January and February, said Hezrina.

She said, targeting an expected total of 2.7 million tourists arrivals from all over the world by the end of 2007, Sabah receives the second highest tourist arrivals throughout Peninsula Malaysia.

The Sabah Tourism Board today will launch its first Travel Fair in the sultanate in the bid to boost further Bruneian tourist arrivals.

The fair which will commence today and end on March 11, will comprise 15 companies who will set up booths, showcasing their products to the Bruneian market, whilst Malaysian Airlines (MAS) and Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) today will also be working together to promote the travel routes between the two countries, and MAS today will introduce special fares to Kota Kinabalu.

Located in the heart of South East Asia, Sabah is a cultural location filled with a population settling on its islands, shores, and plains. Known for its beautiful rainforests, the scenic islands Sabah is an haven for travellers venturing for both a rich nature and leisure experience.
