THE Institute of Medicine of Universiti Brunei Darussalam's first publication of its peer-reviewed Journal of Health was officially launched yesterday to disseminate the latest developments and future directions of biomedical science from national and international health practitioners.

Research findings in the yearly journal were compiled from the institute's inaugural academic session which discussed last year a total of 51 research presentations on current practices and techniques in medicine, surgery and community health.

"The Brunei Darussalam Journal of Health will serve to further improve communication between health personnel in Brunei and other countries, particularly within the Asia Pacific region," said Dato Paduka Dr Hj Ismail Hj Duraman, UBD's vice-chancellor during the institute's second annual academic session yesterday.

The academic session provides a platform for health professionals and researchers to share and highlight their research interests, promote discussions on inter-disciplinary collaborations, as well as create awareness of the importance of research and information exchange within the medical and health community in Brunei.

Some 72 papers, including guest lectures, have been submitted for the academic session, themed "Cultivating Research Talents through Interdisciplinary Collaborations", this year.

Dr Mas Rina Wati Hj Abd Hamid, who co-chaired the second annual academic session, in her keynote address, said that collaboration is beneficial as it helps to monitor progress and enhance the research culture among local and foreign health professionals.

The success and continuity of collaboration depends on social characteristics of the relationship, and not just on empirical knowledge alone, she said.

During the academic session, cardiologists at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (Ripas) Hospital concluded that the scientific study of factors affecting coronary artery disease has not been studied systematically in Brunei.

Meanwhile a member of the institute, Mohammad Moshaddeque Hossain, highlighted the principles of ethics in health research, which is primarily concerned with the protection of human participants.

About 200 participants, including international health practitioners and senior officials at the Ministry of Health attended the institute's annual academic session, the first of its kind to be organised in the country. The Brunei Times
