Chinese Muslims visit Jame' 'Asr

A TEN-MEMBER from the Guangdong Provincial Islamic Association visited Jame' 'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah yesterday morning as part of their four-day visit to the sultanate to strengthen the relationship between Muslims of the two countries.

Led by its president, Ma Yujun, the Chinese delegation was welcomed on arrival by Awg Hj Abdul Aziz Akop, Jame' 'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Officer and officials from the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

The visitors were taken on a tour around the mosque, including the multi-purpose hall where the delegates had the opportunity to witness an official conducting a pre-marriage course.

The Guangdong delegates visited the Jame' library which is named after the former State Mufti, Ismail Omar Abd Aziz Library.

According to the librarian, there are 26,000 books available here and the library is open to the public during working hours.

"The books available here are in four different languages,"she said.

When asked about the availability of Chinese books, she said they only "have a very small number of Chinese books here as the number of its readers is very small".

Today, the Chinese delegation will be visiting the Ministry of Religious Affairs where they will be presented with briefings on the organisational structure and function of the ministry.

This will be followed by visit to the Tahfiz Quran Institute, the Seri Begawan Religious Teachers' University College and the Ministry of Home Affairs in the afternoon.

Out of China's total population of more than 1.3 billion people between one and three per cent or 28 million are Muslims.

Before their visit to Brunei Darussalam, the 10-member Chinese delegation visited Malaysia and Singapore for similar tours.
