KB market to be ready by Oct

THE foundations of Kuala Belait's new market were laid yesterday morning with the blessings of several government dignitaries and senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The marketplace on Jalan Bunga Simpur, the construction for which started in October, will span three acres and will house up to 90 stalls. The building is expected to be completed in late October and will occupy the former site of a workshop belonging to the Public Works Department.
Hawkers who normally operate at the town's old market on Jalan McKerron have been earmarked to move into the premises once it is finished. The site blueprints have allocated 45 counters for vegetables, nine for cakes, 13 for meat, 17 for fish, and six for chicken. Other necessary amenities include a cold storage area, a prayer room and a section for ablutions.
Yesterday morning's foundation-laying ceremony was inaugurated by the guest of honour, Minister of Home Affairs, Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Awg bin Adanan Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Hj Awg Mohd Yusof. Also present were the deputy minister, permanent secretaries and deputy permanent secretary of Home Affairs, as well as officials from the Municipal Department of Belait District.
This was followed by a tree-planting ceremony and a tour of the Tudung Saji stalls, the Immigration Department, the National Registrar Branch in Belait and the Belait Labour Department.
