Brunei, Canada ties growing

Tuesday, May 1, 2007

IN A sign of further strengthening of relations between Brunei Darussalam and Canada, three Canadian companies will be taking part in the Brunei International Defence Exhibition-Bridex 2007 scheduled to open on May 31.

The participation contract was signed yesterday at the office of the High Commission of Canada in Bandar Seri Begawan.

In an exclusive interview with The Brunei Times, Canadian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam, His Excellency Leopold Battel said the Canadian companies have booked two booths at the first-ever defence exhibition to be held in the sultanate.

His Excellency said: "Currently we are not in a position to divulge the identity of the companies, although I can mention that all three companies are excited at the opportunity to present their products and services at the Bridex. Each company has an area of specialisation such as surveillance and communication."

He also mentioned that "Bridex 2007 is indeed a very good initiative. Much can be done to further develop the partnership between the two countries through such fairs."

"Canada has the latest technologies that can be offered to the Brunei market on a bigger scale."

He said only three Canadian companies have been able to confirm the participation at the Bridex because of short notice as many otheres had committed themselves for other international defence fairs.

"Otherwise many more companies would have participated."

However, he added, that hopefully in the coming years "we will be able to see more participation of Canadian companies in events like Bridex".

His Excellency Battel also lauded Brunei Defence Ministry for its efforts and commitment for the upcoming event.

The Canadian High Commissioner said that events such as Bridex will not only bring in large number of latest defence technology into Brunei but at the same time, it can also serve as a gateway to showcase Brunei Darussalam to the rest of the world in its military aspects.
