Youth urged to follow teachings of their elders

Wednesday, May 2, 2007

SENSITIVITY and concern towards the less fortunate individuals and senior citizens should be promoted as one of the characteristics of various communities in Brunei Darussalam, according to Hj Ahmad Hj Abd Rahman, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

Apart from organising cultural and sports activities, "we need to be concerned with people who are less fortunate by lending a helping hand based on our own capabilities", he said during the Adau Gayoh celebration by the Pakatan Sang Jati Dusun Association at Tutong yesterday.

"Senior citizens need attention and genuine care, as it is inappropriate for them to lead a lonely life," he said.

He called on youths of the ethnic Dusun community to take the teachings and examples set by the elderly, such as the power of endurance, as an inspirational resource for youths in their everyday life. "This is because our country needs citizens who can endure and are competitive," he added.

Hj Ahmad said that the Pakatan Sang Jati Dusun Association, which has been operating for 49 years, spurs a feeling of pride because managing a non-governmental organisation on a voluntary basis is not an easy job, but requires sacrifices from its leaders and moral support from its members.

Even though celebrating the results of paddy harvesting is no longer a reason to observe Adau Gayoh at the moment, the spirit of gathering and going home to be with families, relatives and friends is still considered as the main activity during this festive season, he added.

One of the highlights of the celebration was the cultural performances by the Dusun community from the Tutong and Belait districts. Performers from all walks of life danced to the rhythms of traditional musical instruments and drew the attention of the audience with their dance moves. Other activities lined up include the traditional drum beating competition and a friendly sports event on Sunday.
