Encouraging maths among students

THE 15th Explomaths 2007 was launched yesterday afternoon at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (Ripas) Secondary School in Tutong District.
Officiating at the launch was Awg Hj Kamaludin Hj Bungsu, the Asset Darat Manager of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP).
In his speech, Awg Hj Kamaludin said, "The role of Mathematics, Science and Technology is particularly important in the oil and gas industry as well as in the social and economic development of the country."
He added that in order to produce a sustainable oil and gas industry, skilled and capable energy sources are required, particularly in the fields of petroleum engineers, geology specialists, chemistry engineers and mechanical engineers.
The event, organised by the Ministry of Education and sponsored by BSP, aspires to expose students to powerful ways of exploring the limits of attainment or knowledge in understanding the world of Mathematics.
This year's Explomaths which carries the theme: "Exploring Mathematical Thinking Skills" will be hosted by Ripas Secondary School and Sekolah Rendah Binturan Tutong 1, the convening schools for secondary and primary schools throughout the country. These convening schools will be conducting 10 programmes and activities such as competitions, talks and workshops. This will include the main event, the National Mathematics Quiz for Primary and Secondary schools that is expected to end in September.
These programmes and activities are aimed at increasing students' skill and interest in Mathematics as well as discover new knowledge, meaning and applications in Mathematics.
Sekolah Rendah Binturan Tutong I, host school for the primary school division, has already made headway in their programmes and activities with the Maths Race Competition that had 14 primary schools participating, Maths Poster Competition with 30 primary schools, ICT Across the Maths Curriculum Competition, 36 primary schools and the Creative Maths Teaching Aids Competition with 10 primary schools.
The secondary school division has initiated one activity, the Mathematics ICT Workshop (for teachers) for Group A, with 42 secondary schools participating.
At the event, a mock cheque of $50,000 was presented by the guest of honour to the Principal of Ripas Secondary School, who is also the chairperson of Explomaths. This was followed with a prize presentation to winners of the Poster Drawing Contest and Maths Race Competition. The ceremony ended with the viewing of an exhibition of poster drawings and teaching aids. Mathematics Workshop and Maths Treasure Hunt are some of the activities that will be conducted throughout the duration of the Explomaths.
