ATHLETES joining the Special Olympics walkathon on May 13 are in for a treat.
An event sponsor, strategic land investment company Profitable Plots (B) Sdn Bhd, is giving away shirts, caps and other freebies to the special athletes.
A total of 200 special needs athletes and their families are expected to join the 3.5km walkathon, which will start from Taman Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddin to Tasek Lama Recreational Park.
Ikka Patama, Profitable Plots Regional Director, said, "We are always willing to help in providing assistance to the needy and by this move we hope to enlighten the spirit of the participants for this event.
"Our corporate philosophy on social responsibility is to play an active role towards charitable endeavours for the community here in Brunei as well as in our offices in the United Kingdom, Singapore, Canada and Malaysia."
Profitable Plots, a strategic land investment company, is also providing the banner, finishing line and paper bags for the walkathon.
Pg Datin Noraini Pg Dipa Negara Laila DiRaja Pg Abdul Momin, the board chairman of Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam, received the items yesterday.
She said that since their formation three years ago they have been getting encouraging public support. Though the response has been positive, more support is needed to look after children with special needs for them to become a common part of society.
When asked what else needs to be done, she said, "Somebody has to push the advocacy, of the rights of the disabled people in Brunei. We are moving towards this steadily."
On the day of the walkathon, a carnival will also be held at the Tasek Lama Recreational Park for the whole day to raise funds and public awareness about Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam.
Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam was registered in 2004 with the cooperation of the Ministry of Education through the Special Education Unit, Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sports and Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam.
The organisation is committed in providing year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic type of sports for children and adults with special needs.
