Minister of foreign affairs and trade meets Japanese minister

HIS Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, received in audience His Excellency Akira Amari, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan at the Balai Penghadapan, Bukit Kayangan yesterday.

His Excellency Akira Amari, a specialist in the field of intellectual property rights and energy policy, began his political career in 1983, following the footsteps of his father to become a member of Japan's House of Representatives after spending a few years in Sony Corp.

In 1998 His Excellency served as Labour minister under Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi.

Minister Akira is in the sultanate to attend the two-day 13th Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) Economic Ministers' (AEM) Retreat.

As previously reported by The Brunei Times, Brunei's Second Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng, had consultations with the European Union Trade Commissioner, Peter Mandelson, as well as an informal consultation with the Japanese minister.

The 13th AEM retreat discussed the blueprint on Asean Economic Community outlines the action plan and measures for the realisation of the Asean Economic Community 2015. It also looked at economic inputs and issues related to the establishment of the Asean Charter; enhancement of economic agreements related to trade in goods and investment and measures for the integration of services sector within the region as well as issues related to the various free trade agreements Asean is negotiating with its dialogue partners.

Yesterday at the signing ceremony of Brunei Darussalam's Methanol Project Finance Agreement, the Japanese minister emphasised the importance of industrial cooperation between the two countries, through the establishment of the project contributing to the country's employment and industrial diversification.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website (www.mofa.go.jp), in March Brunei Darussalam's Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Lim Jock Hoi has led a delegation to the Fourth Round of Negotiations for the Japan-Brunei Economic Partnership Agreement (JBEPA) where they discussed and finalised the texts for all fields of the negotiations towards the signing of the agreement.
