US alumni body set up in Brunei

Wednesday, May 16, 2007

ALL Bruneian alumni of American universities or institutes of higher education are invited to register as members of Brunei's recently established American Alumni Association (AAA).

To register, interested individuals can contact the US Embassy at 2229670 ext 2131. Parents are invited to register the details of their children who are currently studying in the US. There are 21 Bruneian citizens studying in the United States now and the number is increasing every year.

The steady growth in the number of Bruneians interested in pursuing their studies in the US had prompted the US Embassy to work closely with a number of Bruneian alumni for the establishment of AAA.

The association aims to promote and maintain friendship and cooperation amongst its members through regular cultural, recreational and intellectual activities.

It also seeks to develop social, cultural, educational and business links with American alumni from other countries and at the same time, provide advice and guidance to members and their friends who wish to continue their bachelor or postgraduate degrees in the US.

After graduation, the students will become active members in the association and have the opportunity to network and develop business contacts.

The interim president of the association, Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, Minister of Development, in a press statement applauded the hard work and continuous efforts by the interim committee in making the association a reality.

"I hope the association can fulfill its goal in promoting social, cultural, educational and business links with other American alumni in other countries and enrich and deepen understanding between members."

US Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Emil Skodon expressed his gratitude to the government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam for consenting to the creation of the new AAA.

"We hope this will give those Bruneians who have benefited from the education in the US an opportunity to meet and share their experiences, as well as encourage new generations of Bruneian scholars to pursue their education in the US," he said.

The alumni's membership is open to all Bruneian citizens and residents who have attended a course of study at a US higher education/institution.

Members will be able to provide an outreach to citizens and residents of Brunei who are interested in furthering their studies in the US.

For academic year 2006-2007, the US has issued exchange visas to more than 591,050 students from countries all over the world.

The US Embassy said this is the highest total ever recorded, a 13.9 per cent increase from 2005 and is five per cent higher compared to the previous peak year of 2001.
