THE new chief executive officer of HSBC brings with him a colourful career to Brunei Darussalam. Tareq Muhmood has had stints in the financial world of Hong Kong, London, New York, and the Middle East.
From December 2004 until last month, Tareq sat in the role of chief executive officer of HSBC in Iraq. He was responsible for navigating HSBC's re-entry into the financial services industry, negotiating with the Iraqi Central Bank, government officials and Coalition authorities to obtain approvals that saw him accomplish a remarkable effort by anyone's means.
To cap his achievement, he has left Iraq in good stead with 13 branches nationwide.
In Brunei, Tareq has already been proactive with the local scene under the "HSBC Cares" community initiative where he, and 100 other staff, took part in a fundraising walkathon organised by the Special Olympics.
"I am impressed with HSBC's strong presence in Brunei and am really looking forward to heading this great team of people," he said.
"This year's 60th anniversary of operations in Brunei is a unique milestone attributed to the loyal support of our customers. I am going to continue to maintain HSBC's international reputation as an organisation that provides the best financial services and solutions to our customers, and also one that always gives back to our host community," he added.
Tareq has seen unqualified success since he first joined HSBC in 1994, where he has been an international manager for HSBC over the course of his career.
After starting as a manager in HSBC's Trade Services in Hong Kong, his career has seen him take on high profile roles, which include relationship and business development manager of commercial banking at HSBC New York and project manager, Strategy Implementation in London.
Before moving to Iraq, Tareq was also the manager for retail banking for both HSBC Lebanon and Jordan. The double posting involved developing and managing retail banking propositions within the two emerging markets, whilst at the same time leveraging HSBC brand in highly competitive markets.
