Cambodian envoy visits Tutong

THE Cambodian Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, His Excellency Nan Sy made a working visit to the Tutong district.

He was welcomed on arrival by the Tutong district officer, Hj Jamain Momin and the deputy district officer, Hj Haris Othman.

After a presentation about the district and the roles and responsibilities of the district office, the ambassador exchanged views and opinions regarding religion, socio-economy, culture and development both in Tutong and in Cambodia.

His Excellency also made a visit to the Seri Kenangan Beach, one of the recreational hot-spots in Tutong.

Dialogue session

Residents of Mukim Ukong and Mukim Rambai in the Tutong district learned more about immigration and national registration matters in a briefing session with government officials last week.

The session, conducted by officials from the Immigration and National Registration Department, aimed to inform residents about issues relevant to the department.

It also aimed to raise their awareness of the importance of registration for all citizens and residents of the country.

In turn, residents raised their concerns on a variety of issues during the session.

The event was also attended by heads of villages and mukims, members of the village consultative councils in Mukim Ukong and Mukim Rambai as well as the Tutong district officer.

Verses memorising contest

The contest in memorising verses in prayers for primary pupils was conducted with a hope that it will produce students that not only excel in their academic studies, but possess other abilities in other fields, including religious affairs, said Mohmad Ali Hj Nudin, principal of the PKN Bukit Beruang Primary School during the competition yesterday.

A total of three students from each primary level had been chosen to compete in the final, after the preliminary round in the contest, which was organised by teachers of the school.

Meanwhile, a doa kesyukuran was also held to celebrate the conversion to Islam of one of the school's teachers, Adinah Ahmad, a few weeks ago.

Included in yesterday's programme were religious performances such as tausyeh, pantomime and dzikir which were intended to cultivate interest among the students to participate more in such activities.

Youth Council's walkathon

The Tutong Youth Council had organised a walkathon last Sunday, May 13, at the Seri Kenangan Hall.

The event which was held in conjunction with the council's 40th anniversary was aimed at raising funds for the Tutong Orphan's Fund.

The walkathon was officiated by Tutong's Acting District Officer, Awg Hj Jamain bin Momin.

The walkathon saw more than 300 people participate in a 3.5km walk in and around the Tutong District, which began and ended at the Seri Kenangan Hall.

The council will also hold a thanksgiving ceremony at the Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque in Tutong, on May 19 at 6pm.

The climax of the 40th anniversary celebrations will be taking place on May 20.

The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awg Hj Mohammad Hj Daud, will be the guest of honour.
