Thinking skills for youngsters

THE Minister of Education encouraged educators to promote cogitative or thinking skills among students, in addition to the three basic skills of education reading, writing and counting.
Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Hj Awg Abdul Rahman said that equipping students with cogitative skills would produce a generation of intellects who are far-sighted and ready to accept any challenges that come with time.
He was speaking yesterday during a visit to the Pusar Ulak primary school, where he was greeted by the school principal, Hj Sani bin Hj Metassan.
Before touring the school, the minister was given a briefing about the students' academic performance, programmes to promote their educational performance as well as the school's involvement in co-curricular activities, among other things.
In addition to touring the facilities and classes, as well as interacting with the students and staff of Pusar Ulak primary, Pehin Dato Hj Abdul Rahman also launched the school's new reading corner.
Pusar Ulak was built in 1967 and currently has 507 students.
The minister also made a visit to another primary school in the district.
The Hj Mohd Jaafar Maun primary school, built in 1964, is located in Kiulap and currently has 253 students and 21 staff on board.
The minister and his delegation were welcomed by the senior administrative officer, Hjh Halina Hj Awg Minudin.
After a briefing on challenges and issues faced by the school, Pehin Dato Hj Abdul Rahman had the opportunity to inspect the school's premises and facilities.
He also checked in on ongoing classes, and perused students' work as they were having their lesson.
Also subject to close inspection was the school's ICT room, where students could use computers for learning activities.
