RBAF fetes special needs children with gifts

IN A bid to show its softer side, the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) showered 52 special needs children with giveaways to help them in their educational development and well-being. The ceremony, which was held yesterday at the Punai Hall of the Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAirF) base in Rimba, was in conjunction with the air force's 46th anniversary celebrated every May 31.
Sixteen of the beneficiaries are children of Royal Brunei Land Force personnel, six are children of Royal Brunei Navy personnel; seven are children of RBAirF personnel, 17 from the RBAF Support Services, four are children of Training Institute RBAF workers and two are children of Ministry of Defence employees.
The event was to support and raise awareness about people with special needs.
Parents of the special needs children expressed gratitude for the apparent concern of the RBAF over their children.
PW1 Mohammed Jumat, father to Mohammed Jasirwandy, 11, with a special needs condition, said: "We as parents are grateful for the concern RBAF has shown and we want to extend our special thanks. RBAF is the hope of the nation. It is obvious through their concern for all levels of society which includes our children." His 11-year-old child has the mental capabilities of a three-month-old.
Mohammed Jasirwandy has been receiving donations from RBAF every year since he was three years old. He has undergone various medical and traditional treatments. PW2 Talib Abu Bakar, father to Ruqiah Humairah who has a special needs condition, epilepsy semi down syndrome, said: "I have been in the service for 20 years, and the concern shown by RBAF for my daughter has been consistent. Every year since she was four years old, now she is 12 years old, their concern cannot be denied. We are thankful."
Donations presented to the 52 special needs children came in forms of cash contributed by the RBAF Welfare Fund, goody hampers consisting of story books, mini laptops, toys and many more to suit their age and disabilities.
The RBAF Wives Welfare Committee also contributed healthy food packages.
Presenting the donations as the guest of honour was the Commandant of Support Services RBAF, Colonel Pengiran Azmansham Pengiran Mohamed. Also present were military directors, deputy commanders and deputy commandants, officers of RBAF, and parents of the special children.The Brunei Times
