Monday, May 21, 2007

TOURISM sector representatives from Brunei Darussalam and the Chinese city of Xiamen are joining hands to lure more Bruneian visitors to the scenic Chinese port city and bring in more Chinese visitors to the sultanate.

Brunei is an important country and destination for Xiamen's tourism industry, said Li Wen Hui, deputy director general of the Xiamen Tourism Bureau, during a gathering to promote the city at Emperors Court recently.

"This promotion will bring a win-win situation to the tourism cooperation between Brunei and Xiamen," she said.

She added that this cooperation will be further strengthened on a bigger scale.

She stated that the tourism industry in Xiamen has generated revenues of 25.28 trillion yuan ($5.03 trillion), after more than 18 million tourists visited the city, including over one million foreigners.

Jiang Zhida, a representative from the Chinese Embassy in Brunei, said that tourism between Brunei and China is an important area of bilateral cooperation.

He added that this is a good opportunity for Bruneians to find out what the city of Xiamen can offer in terms of its hospitality.

Figures show that China is also one of Brunei's largest inbound markets with about 40,000 Chinese tourists visiting the country in 2005.

Li also gave a brief introduction on Xiamen, which lies on the southeast coast of China with an estimated population of 2.25 million.

Xiamen has been proclaimed as one of the five special economic zones in China, which is a region that has liberal economic laws to attract and increase foreign investment.

The coastal city is also among the top 10 cities for tourism in China for 14 years, as well as gaining recognition as the Model City of Environmental Protection.

Brunei is one of the stopovers for the Chinese delegation to promote the city.

They have previously travelled to to Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Brunei travel agents and other officials from the travel sector were invited to attend the gathering.

Currently, there are no direct flights from Brunei to Xiamen.
