Pakistan's navy concludes visit to sultanate

AFTER a four-day goodwill visit in Brunei Darussalam, more than 400 Pakistani Navy personnel comprising of 34 officers and other crew members aboard the 'PNS Mowain' ship, left the Muara Commercial Port yesterday for the Philippines.

The aim of the visit in the sultanate was to strengthen and enhance defence ties between Pakistan and Brunei. Other countries included in their itinerary are China, Vietnam, Japan and the Maldives.

Activities organised with the Royal Brunei Navy included a reception last Saturday as well as passage exercises or communication and navigating actions.

The ship's commanding officer, Captain Ather Mukhtar, also paid a courtesy call on the Acting Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces.

Friendly football and volleyball matches were also held between the two forces.

During the visit, Pakistan Navy sailors visited Pusat Ehsan, a non-governmental special needs centre. The navy officers and sailors took the time to interact with the special needs children and teaching staff.

They expressed their fondness, care and love for the special children, and toured the centre to observe the various facilities in the institute. To show their appreciation, the sailors presented gifts and sweets to the children.

Pusat Ehsan's staff appreciated the gesture and thanked the sailors for their affection and care.

The Pakistan Naval Ship 'PNS Moawin', which took 18 days to get here from Karachi, is one of the honoured ship of the Pakistan Navy's 9th Auxiliary Squadron. It has a length of 550 feet, a beam of 66 feet and a displacement of 16,800 tonnes. It has a speed of more than 21 knots.

The ship which was transferred from the Royal Dutch Navy in July 1994 together with one Pakistan Navy destroyer sailing to the Maldives and Indonesia providing post-tsunami relief in 2005.
