Post office moves closer to corporatisation

Tuesday, May 22, 2007

THE Postal Services Department of the Ministry of Communications is in the process of moving towards corporatisation, which is expected to take effect by year 2010, said Postmaster General Hj Abdul Kadir Tengah.

The corporatisation of the department will mark a milestone since its establishment in 1859 and is expected to lead towards the development of internationally competitive entities able to benefit from available business opportunities in the country, regionally and globally.

To this effect, the department has initiated an expansion of services to improve on productivity and quality, particularly in the areas of mail delivery and counter services.

One of these newly added services is hybrid mail, which enables government agencies, corporate clients and other bulk mailers to post monthly notices and bills.

Launched earlier this year along with the opening of the new Mentiri Post Office, the hybrid mail service allows an increased amount to be sent to customers, thus saving time and money.

Currently, in an effort to be more systematic and organised, the department is in the process of installing an Automation Counter to all 24 post offices throughout the country for the convenience of its clients.

Through the Automation Counter, the public will be able to pay their water, electricity and telephone bills as well as renew driving licences and road tax.

This new project is expected to be launched by next month.

Furthering their efforts to improve efficiency and quality of service, senior officers and staff of the department were given the opportunity to participate in a Service Quality Management course that started yesterday morning at the Mail and Parcel Processing Centre Building, Old Airport, Berakas.

The course is conducted to improve on the quality of product and image of postal services which is in line with the 2003 Bucharest World Postal Congress strategic plan.

Over the years, officers and staff of the department have been attending courses held at the Asia Pacific Postal College in Bangkok, Thailand. This year, the department made the extra effort to invite a consultant from the Asia Pacific Postal College, Thakur Subhash Sinha, to preside over the five-day Service Quality Management course.

The course is attended by 40 senior officers from the Assistant Post Master General to the supervisor level.
