Brunei to host Hainanese clubs' global congress

BUSINESSES in the tourism sector will get a boost from the 10th Congress of the World Federation of Hainanese Associations, which will gather an estimated 700 overseas participants from more than 20 cities and countries in Brunei Darussalam.
Some 530 hotel rooms in seven hotels in the sultanate have been reserved to accommodate the delegates for the biennial event in October this year. The congress is aimed at strengthening unity among Hainanese communities.
Some of the reserved hotel rooms have been fully booked, according to Bandar Seri Begawan's Hainan Association website.
To further promote the culture and solidarity of Hainanese communities, a cookbook which specialises in Hainanese recipes was launched yesterday, and will be distributed to the delegates during the congress at the International Convention Centre.
More than 30 recipes have been compiled in Our Memorable Hainanese Dishes, including Hainanese Chicken Rice, Hainanese Dumpling, Hainanese Stewed Mutton and Mixed Vegetables Hainanese Style.
Foo Chuan Ping of the Youth Section of Bandar Seri Begawan's Hainan Association said that the booklet demonstrates the love and care of the elderly in preparing the dishes and it is an appreciation from Hainanese youth to publish the recipes.
During the launch of the cookbook, Tan Liang Toon, chairman of Bandar Seri Begawan's Hainan Association, also gave a briefing on the progress of the organisation of the congress of the world's Hainanese associations.
More than 680 local and foreign delegates have registered to attend the congress. He said that all matters pertaining to the congress is currently in progress to ensure that the operations will run smoothly during the event.
Han Ming Yuen, chairman of Kuala Belait's Hainan Association, said that the congress will see the delegates discussing four main issues, including the spirit of Hainanese communities, capacity building for youths, the roles and contributions of Hainanese women as well as improving interaction and the sharing of Chinese cultural knowledge among the delegates.
The three-day congress, themed "Impart Community Knowledge, Strengthen Platform for Collaboration", is jointly organised by Bandar Seri Begawan and Kuala Belait's Hainan association.
Hainanese is a dialect originated from Hainan, the smallest province of China located at the country's south end with an estimated population of eight million.
The Congress of the World Federation of Hainanese Associations is the supreme power organisation of the World Federation of Hainanese Associations. Its was established in 1989 and initiated by Singapore's Hainan association to promote friendly ties among Hainanese associations globally.
