Oral hygiene among top health priorities

ORAL hygiene education ranks among one of the top priorities of the government in its efforts to further promote health information awareness to the younger generation.
Schools and government offices concerned are constantly working together to improve the quality of health among schoolchildren.
Hjh Aishah Hj Muhd Husain, Acting Director of Schools of the Ministry of Education, said that ongoing efforts have been made to provide dental services to more than 60 primary schools and 10 secondary schools by setting up dental clinics in schools.
Dental services have also been made available to students from other schools through mobile dental clinics and health centres, he said during the Oral Health Promotion for School Heads Convention yesterday.
"The convention is held for the first time in cooperation with the Department of Schools, Ministry of Education and Dental Services Department, Ministry of Health with the objective of educating and creating awareness about the prevention and control of teeth caries and gum diseases as well as improving dental health among children and students," said the director in her welcoming speech at the Civil Service Institute in Gadong yesterday.
The theme chosen for this year, "Healthy School, Healthy Smile", involves two vital aspects in promoting healthy lifestyles, namely creating a clean, safe and "green" school environment and emphasising that good dental health can enhance the quality of life.
She emphasised that "prevention is better than cure" and the ministry has implemented the School Health Promotion programme in all government and private schools since October 2001.
"To improve the quality of health among the schooling community, the ministry has formed the School Health Promotion Unit where strategies for the implementation and monitoring of short and long-term plans of the programme in schools (are formulated)," said the director.
"This move also strengthens ties with the Health Ministry and private organisations to provide Bruneian students with healthy lifestyle alternatives to ensure optimum health," Hajah Aishah explained.
As many as six lectures on topics like Islamic perspective of dental hygiene, prevention and control of teeth caries and gum disease were delivered by experts from the Ministry of Health and a counselor from the Public Service Department. The convention was held to assist educators' involvement in the implementation of dental health activities at school.
The Education Ministry said it is hoped that the long-term objectives of the convention. Attending the event was guest of honour Dato Paduka Haji Sheikh Adnan Sheikh Mohamad, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, and 150 school principals, School Health Promotion Unit monitors and teachers.
