280 children join Girl Guides

Friday, June 1, 2007

SOME 280 children have qualified to become new members of the Girl Guides Association of Brunei, after receiving their tenderfoot badges from Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Masna, president of the group.

The new members, referred to as brownies, who are aged six to 11, joined 131 girl guides and 38 young leaders and guiders who also earned their tenderfoot badges during the annual presentation ceremony of badges and warrant cards at Rimba II Primary School yesterday.

Moreover, 43 young and adult leaders were awarded with warrant cards while 23 adult leaders received their pre-warrant cards. Warrant cards allow an adult member to run her own units in schools, colleges and other communities.

Brownies will soon have a newly revised and test book from next year onwards, said Mariam Hj Md Gais, who chaired the working committee of the presentation ceremony.

The current test book for brownies, which has been used since 25 years ago, will be given out for free to members this year, as a donation from the association. It contains programmes to guide the brownies.

The association is significant because it trains members to achieve to their fullest potential and become future leaders, said Siti Mayshara Hj Muhd Yusof in an interview.

Since joining as a brownie in primary six, the 22-year-old who received a pre-warrant card, said that she was interested in becoming a girl guide due to the "spirit of sisterhood" and the opportunity to participate in a group at the domestic and international arena. The group also teaches survival skills, she said.

Hjh Noraidah Kipli, 24, said that becoming a girl guide has taught her how to acquire leadership qualities.

"After joining this year, I've learnt how to cooperate and unite with other girl guides and it gives you motivation to learn from the adult leaders," said the teacher from Dato Marsal Primary School, after receiving her tenderfoot badge.

Sixteen-year-old Nasriyah Hj Kamis said that participating in girl guide activities gave her the chance to experience outdoor activities.

"It teaches us to be more disciplined through teamwork in activities such as camping and bowling," said the Secondary Five student of Sayyidina Hussain Secondary School.

Her Majesty Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha is the royal patron of the association, which was established in 1951.

Its mission is aligned with that of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, which is to enable girls and young women to develop their fullest potential as responsible citizens. The association has more than 1,700 members.
