Invaluable defence dialogue at Bridex
Saturday, June 2, 2007
THE Permanent Secretary of Ministry Defence, Dato Paduka Hj Mustappa Hj Sirat, has hailed Brunei Darussalam International Defence Exhibition (Bridex) 2007 Forum a success, and attributes it to the invaluable dialogue held between participants and distinguished speakers over the last few days at the International Convention Centre.
"The enriching discussion for the one and half days has achieved our goals in providing an avenue to share experiences and knowledge on the latest development and discoveries of defence," said Dato Paduka Hj Mustappa in his closing remarks.
In particular, the permanent secretary pointed out that the knowledge brought to Brunei Darussalam was clear from discussions held with speakers outside of the forum, in corridors and during networking breaks whilst the forum itself touched on a range of dynamic issues from economic enhancement programme to defence technology and homeland security.
He added that there were many elements and aspects which have been beneficial to the ambitions of the sultanate to establish a local defence industry.
"We have recognised the importance of having an effective industrial strategy in order to maximise the benefits to both the armed forces and the nation. The discussion on PFI (private finance initiative) and PPP (public-private partnership) was interesting and useful, in line with Brunei's drive towards developing its future defence industry."
Moreover, Dato Hj Mustappa touched on the importance of investing in technology, the theme of Bridex, as it is a profitable and desirable investment, this being the multiplier tool in enhancing the force capability for the present and future.
The fusion of human and machine capabilities and harnessing its potential was a recurring point of discussion in the forum, with several of the presentations highlighting the importance of partnering multi-dimensional collaboration amongst local agencies and nations in addressing the challenges of global threats.
The forum itself has also given participants the chance to learn more about the characteristics of C4I (Command, Control, Communication, Computers and Intelligence) and the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) that not only heighten the capabilities of the army, but branch out in protecting the general public from any danger to their life and properties.
"The word 'interoperability' is no longer confined to be used by the military personnel, but is also an important term for the civilian agencies and the ordinary people themselves," said the permanent secretary.
