Raytheon explores projects in Brunei
Monday, June 4, 2007
GLOBALLY recognised defence company Raytheon has been in discussion with Ministry of Defence for the past year to provide tailored solutions aligned with the future goals of the sultanate's Defence White Paper that was first launched in 2004.
In an interview with The Brunei Times, Raytheon country manager for Singapore and Brunei Raymond B Corrigan said the company through its United Kingdom's Raytheon has already established working relationships with the sultanate's airforce.
Raytheon has been in discussion with the ministry and has devised opportunities for cooperation in the fields of maritime domain awareness, C4I, air defence and many more. These are best suited to the current capabilities and technical proficiency and interest of RBAF, said Corrigan.
The feedback from the ministry has been "good" and they are currently developing their procurement process, assessing their "capability gaps", he said, adding that the recently updated Defence White Paper will provide a great vision for the sultanate for the next four to five years.
The country manager said: "The company's goal is also to enter into joint ventures with local companies that give value added to joint projects."
"Any company that wants to do business in Brunei needs to look for a local partner for joint partnerships and it is through this partnership that foreign companies can play a crucial role in investing in the country and through the development of a skilled workforce," he added.
In the long run, "this initiative can help to diversify the local economy, in various ways training, maintenance and technology".
Raymond said Brunei organised Bridex impressively, and that it has attracted a good representation of the global defence industry.
Raytheon, which had sales of US$20.3 billion last year, was established more than 80 years ago. The US-based company has a workforce of 73,000.
Today, Raytheon presents a wide range of capabilities and has addressed some of the world's national security needs which include missile defence in northern Asia, air and missile defence in the Middle East, and command and control in Europe.
