Course on managing autistic children

THE Society for Management of Autism-Related Issues in Training Education and Resources (Smarter) in collaboration with the special Unit of the Ministry of Education, recently held a series of workshops on Managing Challenging Behaviour and Autism for the Special Educational Needs Assistance for teachers in all the four districts.

The programmes held at various locations throughout the country was conducted by President of Smarter Brunei, Hj Malai Abdullah Hj Malai Othman.

The programme encouraged the participants to develop an understanding of the core reasons behind each challenging behaviour of autistic children as well as ways to positively support children with special needs in the classroom.

Visit to RBA catering centre

Some 16 patients of the Psychiatric Department of the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (Ripas) Hospital, accompanied by the department's staff, had a life time experience at the Royal Brunei Catering Aircraft Catering Centre (ACC) recently.

Acting Aircraft Catering Manager, Alvin Voon Vern Ming, and Executive Chef of Aircraft Catering Dk Mahani Pg Hj Tajuddin of RBC, were there to receive the visitors.

After a short briefing on ACC's operation, the visitors were taken for a tour to various sections of the ACC.



Nature society holds AGM

Brunei Nature Society (BNS), will be holding its annual general meeting (AGM) tomorrow.

Aiming at promoting love and preserving the nature, BNS frequently hosts talks among its members at the Central Lecture Theatre at UBD on topics of interest in Brunei and beyond.

Recently, 30 of them, including a visiting pianist, joined the Brunei Nature Society's walk in the Tutong District.

The four kilometres walk between Long Tadion and Merangking made the members even more familiar with the natural beauty of the sultanate.

After the walk, they drove vehicles to the fully tarmac-covered extension to join the Labi road at Sungai Mau near the south of Sungai Liang, travelling through agricultural areas along the Belait river.

Business students visits

Twenty students and tutors of the Business School continued their educational visits to more organisations, last week.

Earlier in the week, they visited the Ministry of Industries and Primary Resources to learn more about entrepreneurship in starting businesses and to get to know more about the ministry's working mechanism.

Among the MIPR personnel present to give talks concerning promotion and facilitation services were Hj Momin Hj Sawal, Section Head of Promotion and Facilitation Services, Mariani Hj Sabtu, Acting Head of Industrial and Trade Promotion Unit,Hj Damit Hj Mohd Arshad, the Assistant Director as well as other officers of the ministry.

Later in the week, the students isited the leading Islamic banking institution in the country, Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam Berhad (BIBD).

There the studentswere given video presentation by the Bank's Manager of Sales and Marketing, Awg Hj Muhammad Zainul Hj Sulaiman, and Hj Shahrin Hj Mohd Yusof, Manager of SMEs Service Centre.

The students were also shown to some of the bank's Islamic products, especially on small and medium entrepreneur; financing and other services and facilities.

Tai Chi members won medals

Brunei-Muara Tai Chi Association won 17 medals at the 17th International Tai Chi Competition held in Sabah recently.

The team brought home five gold medals, three silver medals and four bronze medals and another five medals for getting fourth place in the competition.

Thirty-five members represented the association in the two-day event and competed against 300 participants from 20 teams including Malaysia, Taiwan and Australia.

The championship is held once every two years and the next competition is set to be held in Pahang in 2009.

PTA bowling tournament

A bowling tournament organised by the Parent-Teacher association of Kiarong Primary School was held recently, aimed at fostering relations between parents and teachers.

The annual activity was held at the Bowling Centre in the capital.

The tournament was officiated by the association's chairman, Awg Hj Hakip Hj Burut.

Some 40 bowlers took part in the game which was divided into men and women categories. The tournament ended with thirteen winners received their prizes from the guest of honour.
