Uphold thirst for knowledge

Saturday, June 9, 2007

PARENTS and educators carry a great responsibility to elucidate the value of a good reading habit to the next generation.

In keeping with the nationwide Reading Month event currently being held at all state libraries, this Friday's sermon provided discourse on maintaining a thirst for knowledge and learning in the community.

Islam regards knowledge as the foundation for self-development, which explains its insistence that its followers participate in the pursuit of knowledge, in order to develop thought and open their minds. It can be said that literacy has an important role in raising mankind out of ignorance and into enlightenment. History tells of renowned Muslim scholars who were simultaneously well-versed in several fields of study, such as mathematics, astronomy, physics and economics.

An affinity for books should ideally be instilled from an early age. Parents need to communicate the reading habit as a desirable characteristic, through teaching by example.

Cultivating a reading culture in society can be achieved through holding prominent campaigns to raise awareness on the benefits of a reading culture. . The Language and Literature Bureau has made use of its position to propagate this culture, and organised the Reading Month initiative for June.

It is also recommended that even higher education institutions should hold 'reading weeks'.

While those well read will be better equipped to ward off negative elements/influences, it is imperative however to be cautious in reading selections.
