Hotel occupancy rates surge due to festivities

THE hospitality industry in Brunei is showing positive signs of movement after major hotels noted a surge in hotel occupancy rates compared to this time last year.
Some attributed this increase to the two-week royal wedding celebrations, with more than half of their hotel rooms occupied by domestic and foreign tourists alike.
There has been a 40 per cent increase, in contrast to figures in early June last year, a sales representative from Sheraton Utama Hotel told The Brunei Times.
She said the hotel currently has an 80 per cent occupancy rate, with most of the foreign tourists on travel agencies' tour packages and residents from the Temburong district.
"There has been a healthy increase in our hotel occupancy rate compared to this time last year," said Jennifer Kang, public relations and marketing communications director at The Empire Hotel & Country Club.
The increase comes from a combination of domestic and regional tourists, while some are invited royal wedding guests, she added.
She said that select categories of rooms are still available, despite the rising numbers in hotel occupants.
The foreign tourists are aware and excited to witness the royal wedding celebrations after finding out from news reports on the royal wedding through the local media, she said.
Diamond Sadik, assistant front office manager of Orchid Garden Hotel, said that all the hotel rooms are fully booked for three consecutive days.
Our hotel occupancy rate currently stands at 60 per cent, which is a significant rise compared to last year, said a spokesperson from the Brunei Hotel in the capital. He also noted the increase of domestic tourists from Temburong district, as well as the rise of tourists from the Asean region.
"There is definitely an increase of hotel occupants, including residents from all districts," said a sales representative from Rizqun International Hotel.
However, he said that it is unrealistic to compare last year's figures because the hotel first opened in March 2006.The Brunei Times
