Revisiting old maritime trade empire

Wednesday, June 20, 2007

BRUNEI Darussalam is set to unveil more of its rich heritage and boost its historic reputation as a maritime trade empire with the opening of the Maritime Archaeology building next year.

The building, whose external design is based on the lines of a ship to denote its nautical association, will feature three permanent exhibition halls and a temporary one to showcase past Bruneian lifestyles, which were closely linked to the river and sea systems.

According to the Museums Department, in addition to artifacts related to early maritime-related Brunei history, there will also be exhibits of chronological records of Brunei's relations with other countries as well as archaeological artifacts, particularly those from shipwrecks found in the sultanate's coastal waters.

Bantong Antaran, acting director of museums, said that the exhibitions will also serve to raise awareness of and appreciation for the country's cultural heritage.

Located near the Malay Technology Museum in Kampong Pelambayan, Kota Batu, construction of the river-front building will cost $4.7 million. Preparation work on the 8.74 acre site began in December last year.

Construction of the Maritime Archaeology building, which is expected to be completed by June next year, got its official start yesterday in a foundation laying ceremony that was attended by Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Hj Mohamad Hj Daud.
