'Critical thinking key to mastering mathematics'

A MATHS Carnival kicked off yesterday at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (Ripas) Secondary School.
The carnival is one of the five programmes under the 15th eXplomaths 2007, organised by the Ministry of Education that started in March.
The school's principal, Roslin Suhailee, chairman of the event, expounded on the theme of eXplomaths 2007, "Exploring the mathematical thinking skill".
He said in his speech that critical thinking and analytical process is the key to mastering mathematics.
Officiating at the launch of the carnival was the Acting Director of Curriculum, Ministry of Education Awg Hj Matassan Hj Bungso.
Twenty-five schools are participating in the two-day event with more than 40 projects on mathematical puzzles, games and challenges with prizes to be won.
Yong Chen Ket, leader of the group from Chung Ching Middle School, Kuala Belait told The Brunei Times that they were given two weeks' deadline by their teacher, Sunil Krishnan to complete their project, but they managed to do it in just four days. And with no help at all from their teachers, they added.
Carnival coordinator Hjh Siti Seronie Hj Mohd Salleh, a Maths teacher at Ripas Secondary School, said, "Students are given exposure and they gain communication skills and self-confidence".
She added that such events also teach students the meaning of teamwork, which is most important.
Adibah, Fitri and Siti Nurjamalina, Form Four students at the school, said that they enjoy meeting and making friends with students from other schools.
"The maths problems to solve at the carnival tested our minds," they said.
It is expected that the two-day carnival will be visited by some 45 schools from around the nation.
Other events that come under the Xplomaths 2007 include a maths treasure hunt and a national mathematics quiz.
