Make Maths fun, teachers told

Wednesday, June 27, 2007

THE traditional way of teaching mathematics is "dry and dull" and produces passive learners, said a senior official at the Ministry of Education.

The Acting Director of Curriculum Development, Awg Hj Matassan Hj Bungso, said that the conventional approach of 'telling the rules and procedures' not only makes learning Mathematics dreary for children, but will also produce learners with faulty and deficient understanding of mathematical principles.

He also held the view that opportunities must be provided for every student to explore wide-ranging applications of mathematics beyond the classroom.

Speaking at the opening of the Mathematics Carnival at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Secondary School yesterday, Awg Hj Matassan said that meaningful and exciting experiences will motivate students to persist rather than admit defeat when learning is not smooth and easy.

He also advised teachers to adopt of various teaching styles and methods, including providing students with hands-on experiences and include creative learning tasks and materials.

"We should diversify modes of presentation and use ICT in our classroom from time to time in order to sustain students' motivation," he continued, adding that such approaches will contribute to the development of the students' creative and innovative thinking and positive attitudes towards mathematics.

Consistent efforts from schools, teachers, parents, students and the community are also needed in building a strong mathematics culture in the sultanate, he added.
