BRUNEIAN Trans-Africa travellers had a message for every Bruneians: "If we can do it, then anyone can do it."
Returning to the sultanate after 11,600km travel across Africa, the goodwill ambassadors Norhayati Abu Bakar, Harun Eichbauer Abdullah said they want to encourage and inspire the Bruneian youth through expedition to venture out and explore the world.
During a press conference at the Ministry of Industry, Primary Resources (MIPR) yesterday, the two discussed their expedition which began in April with a view to promoting Brunei,
When asked what made them take up such arduous journey, Norhayati said in her younger days she was very much fascinated by the documentaries she had seen on such travels and
through this expedition she wanted to 'open a new chapter' for youths in the sultanate.
She said if foreigners can make such documentaries why can't Bruneians? "If Norhayati can do it, anyone can do it," said Pengiran Salleh Ab'Rahaman, the man responsible for getting sponsors for the expedition, who was also present at the conference.
Norhayati said, "We were successful in promoting the country throughout African. Radio, television and newspapers all highlighted the travellers from Brunei."
The African media would often ask where Brunei was, and often thought it was part of Africa, said Norhayati, adding that those who knew, only knew Brunei as 'richest country' near the Philippines.
During the expedition, they also distributed slippers and balls donated by Bruneians, and medicines provided by the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (Ripas) Hospital in the areas where they were not available for the last one year, said Norhayati.
Harun also talked about the difficulties encountered during the expedition.
He said finding correct routes on the way was always difficult and so was driving during the nights.
Besides, he said they were very careful about the quality of water and had taken vaccinations for yellow fever, polio, and many more prior to the expedition.
Brunei Tourism Development Board, CEO Sheikh Jamaluddin Sheikh Mohamed was pleased with the expedition said "They have reached the part I couldn't reach".
Sheikh Jamaluddin said the two are like 'ambassadors of our country' carrying a goodwill message and image wherever they go."
He said the Brunei Tourism will support them by helping in paperwork involved like getting visas for their expedition.
Pengiran Salleh Ab'Rahaman invited the sponsors to support couple's second leg of expedition.
