SME fair extended for two days

Saturday, July 7, 2007

STRONG sales of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) participating in the Local Products Fair 2007 have encouraged organisers to extend the event for two more days.

The fair held at Tutong Central Mall which is aimed at giving SMEs wider exposure was scheduled to end yesterday, but this has been extended for the weekend to allow for further sales as sales figures tend to be stronger during weekends.

Locally made products turned out to be quite popular among buyers visiting the fair.

Syarikat Rostas Hijau, which sells locally made sauces and various other popular condiments, is among enterprises that have seen its cash tills ringing at a healthy pace.

Its most popular product at the fair is Selera Ambuyat, a tangy sauce that is usually taken with ambuyat, a local delicacy.

"Every day we usually sell around 30 bottles, and on weekends even more," said a lady the enterprise's booth.

BMC Food Industries Sdn Bhd also participated in the fair to promote its new meat product, chicken luncheon meat, which is yet to be sold in supermarkets.

The pre-cooked meat was available for sampling and the food processor has plans to sell it in supermarkets after the expo.

Sauces sambal, acar limau and kuah rojak were just some of the popular products sold by Haminon Enterprise.

"Every day we end up having to make more (of the products)," a lady manning the booth said, referring to the high demand the enterprise experienced during the fair.

More than 200 bottles of sambal are sold daily, and even more on weekends, she said. It might have something to do with the booth's strategic location shoppers are constantly walking past it, the sales staff surmised.

Food was not all that was sold at the fair.

Custom tailoring also experienced positive results. Hj Jali Damit of Syarikat Hashma who also has a shop in the capital said it was his first time participating in a product expo.

He aims to create awareness and promote his company, and so far he is pleased with the positive response he has received from buyers.

Rosniedris Enterprise was also fortunate to receive good results. Its best-seller, cekedis kacang peas proved to be widely popular among buyers, many of whom have placed orders as the enterprise struggled to meet growing demand.

"We are also displaying for Hari Raya preparations," said Rosniah Hj Ahmad Zaini.
